Cloud Foundry Foundation: Open Source PaaS for the Enterprise

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Cloud Foundry is the leading open source cloud application platform on the market today. It incubated at VMware starting around 2010. VMware then spun off Pivotal, Cloud Foundry’s commercial arm, in 2013. The team at Pivotal decided to open source Cloud Foundry in 2014, and in 2015, the Cloud Foundry Foundation joined the Linux Foundation.

Today, Cloud Foundry features development in multiple languages, and by incorporating efforts from the Open Containers Initiative and the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, supports a range of modern container technologies, including Kubernetes and Docker.

The Cloud Foundry Foundation drives several other initiatives in addition to the core platform, including BOSH, a release engineering, deployment, lifecycle management, and monitoring tool. With the help of Pivotal and Google Cloud, the Cloud Foundry Foundation is now steering Kubo, which brings the capabilities of BOSH to Kubernetes.

The result is perhaps the first truly enterprise-class container management and orchestration suite – and enterprises are taking notice. At least 40% of Cloud Foundry Foundation members are from end-user organizations (as opposed to software vendors), and the Foundation’s regular conferences are becoming increasingly enterprise-centric.
