SteelConnect SD-WAN: Riverbed Technology’s Wayne Gretzky Moment

Until recently, the emerging notion of ‘software-defined’ has largely been fragmented.

In the application development world, taking a software-defined approach to configuring the operational environment to support rapid software deployment is an important enabler of the DevOps movement.

Similarly, software-defined networking – so essential for the internal operations of public clouds – has become an increasingly important part of the enterprise networking story.

Pulling together the application and networking contexts of the software-defined trend, however, has largely been out of reach, until now.

At last week’s Disrupt customer event, Riverbed Technology laid out a software-defined strategy that combines the network and application worlds into a seamless, powerful reinvention of how networking meets the increasingly dynamic needs of the business.

In fact, Riverbed’s move is remarkably bold, a ‘skate to where the puck will be’ strategy intended to leapfrog over networking bellwethers like Cisco Systems, positioning Riverbed as a thought leader in the burgeoning ‘software-defined everything’ space.

Riverbed CEO Jerry Kennelly was unabashedly sanguine. “We’re going into the mainstream networking market for the first time,” Kennelly says. “It’s fundamental seismic shift in the company.”
